Many metal roofs have what are called “exposed” or “through” fasteners, meaning the heads of the screws are visible on the roof. Even though the screws have neoprene washers and cap heads, there are still actually thousands of holes through the roof’s surface. As the metal panels expand and contract with temperature changes, the metal pulls against each fastener, and the holes around the fasteners become even larger. Eventually, the fasteners loosen over time, threatening the roof’s wind resistance and creating a risk of leaks around the enlarged, exposed fastener holes.

Rustic Shingle, by comparison, has concealed fasteners. Installed similarly to standard shingles, each successive layer of roofing covers the fasteners that secure the previous layer.
